Dalithoi

There is probably no one in the GSB community who does not like to consume this wonderful Dalithoi. There was a thread about Konkani food in the Orkut GSB community and the topic of Dalithoi came up. So, this post is for those who would like to know more about Dalithoi. Also, I would like to thank Rammohan , Girish and Avinash for providing this valuable and enlightening information.

Here we go.....

Karishma: hey can sme one tell me what is dis dalithoy????is it sum manglorean cuisine???

(Enter Girish..)
Girish: @ Karishma
hey can sme one tell me what is dis dalithoy????is it sum manglorean cuisine???

It's a dish which prepared by using thori daali (thuvar daal). the dish is very similiar to daal (daal roti) prepared by north Indians, as from my knowledge manglore is not the origin for dalithoy, In kerala my grandma used to prepare this.but mangloreans are very much fond of daalithoy.

(Enter Rammohan..)
Rammohan: There is nothing exotic about Dalitoy.

"Toy" is derived from Toyam (=Water) in Sanskrit. Equivalent in Kannada is "Tave" with the same Sanskrit Root.

Dalitoy is simply Dali-che Uddak. That's all.

From Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 9.26)

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it

As you can see there is nothing about Mangalore in Dalitoy. [ Too much!! ]

(Enter Avinash..)
Avinash: You forgot.... DDT and PDT
Daat dali toy and pattal dali toy (depending on the quantity of water) he he

Rammohan: Avinash, Thankfully you clarified - diluted with Water. We now in live in an age where Soda consumption is not too insignificant [ LOL]

(Karishma is now enlightened by all this gyan!)

Karishma: hey thanx fr d info!!!

Translation of the above for the Non Konkani readers:-

Dal and Karela Kosumbri( A Konkani dish )is the best combination. There is nothing which beats that in this world. LOL!!
