Froop!

Had been to Mangalore in the weekend. The city buses in Mangalore have this concessional rate for students (popularly known as C or CEE or C.R ) and generally the bus charge will be three rupees for any trip. I boarded a bus and handed three rupees to the conductor.
"State bank" I uttered. Its the last stop and it costs five rupees normally without any concessions.

The conductor eyed me from top to bottom and asked me with a smile: "Are you kidding me?"

"No. Seriously! I am a student, " I retaliated.

"Show me the froop man. Show me the damned froop that you are a student."
(Some of the people in my hometown pronounce proof as 'froop')

I always carry my outdated NITK college ID in my wallet and that proved to be of some assistance in this situation. I handed over it to him and he walked away without even bothering to read it. Victory!!

I was sitting in the seat at the back and there were two other 'genuine' students sitting near me. There were a lot of AIEEE and CET mock question papers spread out on their laps and by the looks of it, it seemed as if they were on the way to attend some CET mock test. I think one of them had read the name of the college on my ID when I showed it to the conductor.

"Sir, which branch are you from?. How many hours did you study per day?" he asked me.

I always wanted to masquerade as a mining engineer and wanted to know how it feels. (Honestly, no pun intended)

So, I told him - "Department of Mining Engineering. Well, you know. I used to read for about....."

The guy gave me a condescending look and turned away.

Damn.

P.S: Seriously I believe that its time all the pre-university students are given detailed knowledge about engineering education. Most of them have this preconceived notion that only an electronics or computer science B.Tech degree can help you to attain enlightenment which is clearly not the truth.

I always get tempted to do that man.. But feel guilty and hence desist.. How good is cheating them for a rupee or two when we're earning in 5 figures!? :-D

And those poor PU students.. I tell you they are absolutely clueless as to what engg is all abt! Just the way I and you were :-D They just want to ace, thats it.(read as EC/CS). Today all that ratrace sure seems hilarious!! LOL

@Rithesh:

I have a different scheme man. I con these bus people and whatever money is saved, I give it to the needy people on the footpaths. I also do the same in Bangalore. The ticket costs 5 bucks from my home to office but I give only three rupees to the conductor, who pockets it without issuing me a ticket! I add some three bucks to the two bucks I saved and give it to a person who sits near my office. Poor guy, somehow has lost both his legs.

Now, see the benefits:-

Myself: Nothing economically. Only moral satisfaction of helping the guy.

The conductor: Profit of three rupees. These people do not have a high salary and people like us can help them improve their living. (I am serious!)

The Government: Loss of 5 rupees. Even if a ticket were issued, there are thousands of screwed up corrupt politicians leeching money from the coffers and instead of helping them, I am helping the conductor and the needy guy. And, i also pay loads of income tax and VAT etc etc which will compensate for this small "infringement"! :)

@VK:

The Mangalore scene is different. The buses are all private and the conductors make a lot of money. Not all the money they get is being given to the owner! The owner knows this as well but what can he do?? So, a small percentage of that amount which goes to the conductor's pockets is "conned" by me.

Thanks for the comments guys. I purposely published this post to get some feedback on this new practice that I was doing from the past few months. If you people still find it wrong, then maybe I will discontinue this practice. Seriously.

F*** them ignorant wastages!
Only if they knew that CIVIL was the only branch that got 100% placement in our batch!
F*** them ignorants!
Not that I am concerned about the placements-hell, I ditched mine! Talk about admits man! And with all due respect to u being from ECE, the ECE admits sucked big time when compared to Civil or Chemical!

Nithin "Kitta" Shenoy said...

@Arbitblogs(NR): Definitely. The faculty of Civil department also has a kickass lineup with the highest number of qualified and experienced professors.

P.S: Tronix guys may come tonight to stone my apartment! :)

Or go to that civil guy's house to get stoned.

Awesome conning man.. In udupi, they don't even ask for froop. I pass off as a 12th kid anyway..

The mining bit was too much. U should have tried Mining M.Tech. LoL

@Logik: "Or go to that civil guy's house to get stoned!" - Too much!

Thanks a lot man. At least you appreciated my deeds.

And Mining M.Tech!! Well, I am wondering.... :)

Way to go Kitta!!!
Hilarious post.....

I don't get the logic(pun not intended), how can anybody like ECE without even knowing anything about it?? Up theirs!!!

P.S: You may read my post on a similar issue (Second post!!!)

Nithin "Kitta" Shenoy said...

@R.J.D: Even yours truly did not know shit about ECE, but chose ECE, "took it big time" and came out with a sad 7.36 pointer and is now writing code for a reputed software firm. (IBM ISL. Job is good though. :) )

It doesn't matter now.... For me, Surathkal was all about learning how to learn!!! Hope you're enjoying your coding job...

Hey kitta about the benefits!

To You: Utility wise its still 5 bucks! as thats how much it would have cost anyway.

To the Conductor: Its 3 bucks

And to the government: Surprisingly its not a loss of 5 Rupees. They work on the economy of scale funda( Its economical to produce/offer services on a larger scale). Its much much lesser. The rest you pay goes to the government and unions and in turn to these employees and lots to intermediate pockets. Then why arent they rich? Its the fuel whose cost the government has cheaply passed on to the customer. Think about it. The Bus guys cant ask much as the prices are determined by the union who want more and more people to use it. The people will use it as long as its cheap. So the margin for profit is reduced a lot. But since the scale is so large it does not make a huge difference when once in a while you pass off as a college kid.

My Opinion: That was Cheep Dude!..:D. You have brought disgrace to the well-to-do techie who does not haggle over such prices and lets the economy and Market Crashes determine his fate.

And Yeah!.. Bastard!.. I was the one who introduced you to Lone Wolf and Cub!.. and some more manga and anime..Where is the credit bitch??!!
:D

@guru- I thought this was supposed to be a humorous post...
thnx for the economic insights, anyway..

"You have brought disgrace to the well-to-do techie who does not haggle over such prices and lets the economy and Market Crashes determine his fate."

Well, I am not trying to justify my acts but I feel you have got me wrong. I am not trying to save cash man! I am trying to do something else which may sound arbit also. And the whole idea of the post was to find out the opinions of the junta as I already mentioned before. So, I feel like quitting this practice as not everyone has a very good opinion about this. Fine. :)

And regarding the Lone Wolf and Cub manga, u gave me only ten volumes. I downloaded the remaining eighteen and I took the pain of finding out catchy pages and publishing them here. Some of them actually took the manga from me and are now fans of it.

So, technically, you should get 10% of the credit and the remaining goes to me.

Muhahahahaha!

Come on man. Guru is now at IIM. Obviously he has to comment something that shows his level. We cant blame him. :)

ECE/CSE guys are definitely worth a praise given the amount of slogging which gets them here. But there are guys who end up in Stanford from Metallurgy/Chemical. It's all a mixed bag. [:)] Mechanical and Civil are known for the professors' generosity to grant grades, if not marks. IT rocks on the placement front, while EEE guys always keep the fight between them and EC guys, on the wire....

@Kitta

Idiot!. I was trying to justify your actions man. Dont you see the government hardly loses anything. Their Marginal Cost to add another free rider on the public transport is very low.

And whats with this belting me huh? (read chorey)
Anyway 10/18 is not 10%. As far as downloading goes, you will download anything that that has some moving parts( read audio/video/comics)....:D
And guess who is getting the entire LWC paperback collection?
[Thunderous evil laughter]
:D

Logik said...

@guru - There is a tradeoff to that analysis.. Between all people going for free, and only the Kitta's going for free, there lies an optimal solution.
Of course, this is only optimal if the saved money is spent usefully.
So, in kitta's case, the ends justify the means.
From another point of view, the government actually loses out on one legit seat. If not Kitta, someone else would have taken his slot, and if he paid dutifully, the government would get the entire amount.
Open to debate, but I like the alternative that he has presented.

Nithin "Kitta" Shenoy said...

@Guru: Man.. I was not telling 10/28 = 0.1. You just gave me a chunk of "binary" information and I happened to read it and spread the message. Thats why I get 90% credit. :)

And WTF!! Dont tell me you are buying the whole LWC paperback!! Too much man. You actually became an arbab much before getting your management degree.

@your[Thunderous evil laughter] : You got me there. I cannot think of anything more "thunderous". :)

P.S: I will somehow crawl into ur room and flickyard the paperbacks.

Next year you meet the conductor tell him you are pursu(e)ing an MBA @nitk :)...Nice one man..those students would know about cat by that time and they will admire you :) :)

Ritesh's said...

I will divert the discussion. kitta's main aim was to give some money to the 'needy people on the footpaths' (whomever he cheats to get the money!!!)

My question: Is that good or bad? Isn't he encouraging those 'needy people' to beg (and discouraging them to work)?

Nithin "Kitta" Shenoy said...

@Rithesh: Unfortunately that needy person has lost both his legs and I do not know how or what kind of work he can do. He sits on the footpath near Indiranagar flyover for those who want to verify. :)
